The mild climate and the unspoilt landscapes offer a rich choice for walking, hiking and trekking. The Tarn is perhaps the less touristy region in France. However, the region is rich on walking trails: 4 800 Km, both long-distance walking trails (GR36, GR46, the pilgrims way to Compostela) and many local footpaths. They are well kept, and well signposted: since a few years, authorities, NGOs and walkers are working together for protecting this natural heritage.
One of the circuits connects the many medieval bastides around Albi with their crumbling fortifications, their tiny arcaded squares and their quiet ordered streets. Among the Gaillac vineyards and the twisting gorges of the river Aveyron, you'll find landscapes reminiscent of Tuscany.
