Gaillac wine villages: Cahuzac and Vieux

Vieux

Vieux is a small and lovely village surrounded by Gaillac vineyards. In the last few years, a number of non-French nationals arrived in Vieux, either to live here permanently or as secondary residence. Most of the old farms and houses, built with white limestones, have been restored. The origin of Vieux goes back to the 6th century, when Saint Eugene founded a monastery. In ancient times, Vieux and its church used to be an important centre for pilgrimage: the church counted many relics of “old saints” (hence the name “Vieux?”). After the crusade against the Cathar, the bishop of Albi removed under force the relics and brought them to the Saint-Cecilia cathedral, in order to divert the pilgrims to Albi.

The central place of Vieux is very beautiful, the Saint-Eugene church with its octagonal bell tower are visible from afar. Its a pity the church opens only now and then, its 14th century fresco's are beautiful. Its acoustic is very good: in case you have, the opportunity to assist on a classical concert, you shouldn't hesitate. On top of the village thrones a dovecote (“pigeonnier”), one of the biggest of the area.

Cahuzac sur Vère

Cahuzac-sur-Vère is probably the wealthiest of all wine villages in the Gaillac wine region, if you look to the commerces: a bank branch, 3 bakeries, two butchers, two restaurants, mini-markets... The reason to find is easy: the best Gaillac wines are found here, the soil is among the best, and thus the wine growers earned more money. On the other hand, the fact that both the people and the commune had money to invest resulted not always in an improvement of the views of the village centre. The surroundings however, remain splendid, with nice views on the vineyards: it is perfect for cycling or walking.
